💸 Make $200/mo turning audio into text
the perfect side hustle for blue collared workers
GM. This is Work "After" Work, the newsletter that lights up your day like fireworks on the 4th of July.
Happy early 4th all you hustlers!!
Here’s how we’re starting the week:
🔈 Turning Audio into $$
😂 Meme of the day
TURN AUDIO INTO $$$
In biblical times, they had scribes. Today we have transcribers.
Unlike the ancient scribing gigs (which, I bet were 9-5), transcribing is not that lucrative, but it can pay for your Starbucks coffee and Netflix subscription every month.
And as much as I’d love to dazzle you with my firm grasp of history, this is not the time or place.
So, let’s dive into today’s side hustle—transcription.
What is transcription?
It's turning audio into text.
Basically, you listen to recorded audio and type out the words…and get paid.
Why would someone pay for this? Doesn't software already do this for us?
Yep it does, but it's not always the best. If you use closed captions on TikTok's or YouTube, you know what I mean.
If someone has even a little bit of an accent or doesn’t enunciate the best, the computer gets a good 20% of the words wrong.
This is where you come in.
There's a site called Scribie where you fix these mistakes and can make $400 to $3,200 a month, according to the site.
I think this is a little high so I'm gonna go with $200 a month because we're looking for a side hustle, not a full-time job where you have to work 40 hours.
Nonetheless, this is a work from home at your own convenience side hustle so for all the people who work blue collared back breaking jobs, this is for you.
I read all your intro's so I know there's a lot of you - I gotchu 🤝
Steps to getting started with Scribie
1. Create a Scribie account
Scribie has over 50k transcribers globally and has made $4M in payouts, you're not alone.
You can sign up as a transcriber here. After that, you'll get an email confirmation with a link to complete your account.
2. Verify your PayPal
After you sign up, it's test time.
But before that, you have to set up your PayPal account so you can be paid for the test. Without a verified PayPal, you simply can’t be a Scribie - it's a strict requirement they have.
3. Pass the transcription test to get certified
Now it's test time.
The nice thing is, the test is super short - it's usually 3-6 minutes. They just want to make sure you're a human that can decipher words and write them down.
Your test will be delivered to the customer and they’ll give it a grade. Depending on the grade, you'll either be certified or rejected.
If you're certified, you’ll be paid for the test via PayPal.
If you're rejected, don't fret, you still have 9 more tries left. And if you use all 10 attempts, I think it's safe to say transcribing is not for you 😂
The only caveat: they do get hundreds of applications every day so you might have to wait in line to get certified. It's on a first come-first serve basis though so get goin!
4. Put those fingers to use
Once you're certified, you'll get access to all the available gigs on Scribie.
You can select as many files as you want to transcribe, but you can only claim one job at a time.
Most take 6 minutes to complete and Scribie pays per the audio hour so you're looking at $5-$20 per hour.
Payments are then processed once a day so if you do one hour every day before you go to bed, that's at least $5 * 7 days = $35/wk or $140/mo.
Not bad for a super easy side hustle!
MUST KNOWS FROM YA BOY
Scribie pays more for difficult audio - so if you're really good at understanding different accents, you can make a lot more money
You do not have to be a super typist - Scribie provides an automated transcript that does 60% - 90% of the work. All you have to do is correct the mistakes in the machine-generated transcript
Aim for quality over quantity - Scribie grades each submission on a scale of 0 - 5. Whatever you do, don’t let your rating drop below 2.5 - below this is and they won't let you transcribe anymore
Strive to have an average grade over 3 - this allows you to become a "self-reviewer" meaning you can transcribe and review the same file, doubling your pay 😏
