PLAYLIST CURATION

If you genuinely enjoy music and enjoy making banger playlists, this side hustle is for you.

I didn’t even know this was a side hustle until I went onto Lofi Coding (beats to chill/relax to) playlist on Spotify and saw a link to “submit your track” to their playlist.

I clicked the link and to my surprise, you can “buy them a coffee” for $10 to have your song considered to their playlist.

So I did some digging and I’m still not entirely sure what they’re doing is against Spotify’s Terms of Service but I think they’re good, here’s why:

  • They're not explicitly saying "if you pay us, we'll put you on our playlist with 40k+ followers"

  • They're saying "if you donate to our label, we'll consider your song for our playlist"

This seems to be perfectly legal because this playlist has been going for over a year and with its size, if it was a problem Spotify would have banned the account.

So I went into the rabbit hole of Spotify playlists and found there’s 3 ways to make money:

  1. Take money for song placement

  2. Consider songs for placement

  3. Sell your playlist to someone else

#1 is definitely illegal and will get your account banned from Spotify but from what I can find, #2 is perfectly legal...and #3 would be like flipping houses but instead flipping playlists.

But to make money from any of these 3 ways you first need one thing: a playlist.

And not just any random playlist. One that has active and genuine listeners because those are the ones that artists and labels will pay you money to consider their songs for your playlist.

HOW TO GROW A SPOTIFY PLAYLIST

1. Chose your theme & SEO-optimize titles and descriptions

When you create a playlist, choose a theme that you like. Big jazz fan? Make sure you get Louis Armstrong in there!

If you create a playlist that you love listening to, chances are others will as well.

For your title and description, when people search for "chill punk rock" you want your playlist popping up.

So when you're creating a title and description, try to think about what people would type in for your playlist's theme and make sure those keywords are in your title or description.

2. Create a great playlist

This is all about quality over quantity.

To curate banger playlists:

  • Make them very specific - starting niche is always easier, less competition

  • Don't forget the classics - if I listen to a throwback playlist I expect to hear Party In The U.S.A. 🎤

  • Put the best songs first - the quicker you can get someone to follow your playlist, the better

3. Market your playlist on Facebook and Reddit Groups

If you’re making a punk rock playlist I’d go into an MGK or Sueco subreddit channel or facebook group, add some input then plug that you listen to this great punk rock playlist (your own).

This is a really popular and FREE way people get traction to their playlists. Don't make it an ad, just casually state that you "listen to this fire playlist and you should check it out"

ANOTHER WAY TO DO THIS 👀

Now if you don't want to manage a playlist and worry about people emailing and dm'ing you on every one of your social medias - there are companies that do this for you.

The two main players are PlaylistPush and Submithub *to apply you have to have 1,000 followers on your playlist*

Benefits of using these platforms:

  • They bring the submissions to you

  • 100% legal with Spotify

Cons of using these platforms:

  • They keep most of the profit - you get paid $1 or less per song you listen to

My View: just go out on your own like Retro Jungle with Lofi Coding, set up a Ko-Fi account, accept donations and grow it yourself.

It will be harder in the beginning but once you get it going it'll become a snowball rolling down a hill that just keeps getting bigger.
