💸 Senior Living Needs a Makeover
PLUS your meme of the day
GM. This is Work "After" Work. Welcome to this weeks trends edition - a high demand newsletter from our readers for up and coming trends that most people don't know about.
It's Friday, let's boogie:
🧓 Senior Living is Prime for Disruption
😂 Meme of the Day
SENIOR LIVING COMING IN HOT
You know Baby Boomers - these are all the babies that were born when the men came home after World War II.
You can thank them for all the "ok boomer" memes.
Well today, these boomers are ages 58 to 76 and they're retiring, getting older, and starting to look at senior living.
A crazy stat: they make up over 20% of our population. That's 66 million boomers...imagine 66 million Twinkie's. That's a lot.
We can tell demand is heating up just by the google searches 👀
And senior living is not at all ready. Boomers aren't like their past generation - they're:
wealthier
higher educated
more active
more independent (many live alone)
This all leads to a generation that doesn't like to be bored and has the money to do it.
Sterile retirement homes are going to become a thing of the past as boomers simply won't accept these living conditions and will start to demand better options.
I see two huge opportunities here to take advantage of this trend:
1. Create an upscale 55 and up community with bigger rooms and roomies
Senior living facilities have a lot of problems today.
#1 They're small - the average size of a senior living home is 450 sq ft. That's like a little prison cell, no thank you.
#2 Residents get lonely - family doesn't always come to visit and many live in their rooms alone.
#3 They're not pleasant - ever been to a retirement home? They're all so old and boring.
This is where you would create a community that tackles all three of these things.
Your community would offer bigger rooms with 2 beds to a room and a jack and jill bathroom. Like this:
This way people would have more space and they'd always have a friend to talk to about life..and their back pain.
2. Build a roommate app
Building off that first opportunity, I think helping people find the right roomies will turn into a substantial market.
There are a lot of social, psychological, and health consequences to being isolated and not having people to talk to.
Boomers know this and for people who are going into retirement homes without a partner, having a roommate will become a growing demand.
But the worst thing I would want to do is live out my last years with people I didn't like. That's why an app like this would be so valuable.
It's like a Tinder for senior living 😂
You can match boomers up based off their hobbies, work background, and favorite games to play.
And considering there's 66 million boomers, I could see this getting a decent amount of traction if it's marketed properly where you're showing the struggles of people in retirement homes today and the effects it's having on them.
