The side hustle paying $400/mo
all you need to do is wash hair and clip toenails
GM. This is Work "After" Work, the newsletter that’s equal parts informative, humorous, and slightly absurd — just like that time you tried to sell handmade socks for cats.
It’s Friday, let’s boogie:
🤝 Older folk personal aide
😂 Meme of the day
OLDER FOLK PERSONAL AIDE
You know Baby Boomers - these are all the babies that were born when the men came home after World War II.
You can thank them for all the "ok boomer" memes.
Well, they're no longer babies, and the population of older boomers is growing in the US (~73M). And by 2030, all boomers will be at least 65 years old.
This number of aging Americans can only mean one thing: the elderly care industry is about to be booming.
So now's the time to create a name for yourself so when that boom happens, you can capitalize off it.
How? That's what I’ll be sharing with you today, so walk with me 😉
It's no secret that things just don’t work like they used to when we get old. Those knees and back start to give.
Simple hair washing or clipping toenails becomes the equivalent of running a 5k in your 20s… especially when most can’t reach that far.
This is where you come in: the care/aide for older folks.
And I know this works from personal experience. A family friend pays a lady in his neighborhood $20 every day for her to come over and clean his 96-year-old mother.
That’s $560 a month. Imagine you do it just 5 days a week - $400/mo.
Not bad for not having to go through years of nursing school and helping people who need it the most.
Here’s how I’d start:
There are already ~55M million people over the age of 70. And best believe this number will only grow.
You’ll be performing a lot of the tasks at-home nurses do, like:
Washing Hair
Cutting Toenails
Wiping them after going to the bathroom
Pill prep
The only difference is you don't need a degree or qualifications aka you can’t draw blood or inject any meds.
The steps to getting here:
1. Hop on your local social media groups
You’ll be surprised by how beneficial local group chats can be. Nextdoor is probably the best and most trusted platform to get engagement from your neighborhood.
Even my own mom buys items and keeps up with what’s happening in the town on Nextdoor.
90% of your potential customers are on this app.
Sign up and let your community know you’re available to start helping older folks do the simple tasks they no longer can alone.
Aside from Nextdoor, I’d go after specific Facebook Groups. Search your town’s name. I’m willing to bet they have a FB Group. A random Chicago suburb I chose did.
2. Layout your pricing
I know you’ll get hits if you follow step 1. So next, you need to figure out your pricing.
Here's the thing: you’re not a registered nurse. You’re a “care aide” who can do almost everything a nurse can.
Your pricing has to reflect this.
Search for in-home nurse’s hourly pay in your area and make yours 10-20% cheaper. The average in Illinois is $28. 20% off is $22.
If it’s reasonable, your clients won’t bat an eye because they only need you to do basic tasks — like bathing, giving them their meds, and providing companionship.
From my experience, the lady that makes $20 every time she comes over to clean up their 96-year-old mother is only a 20-minute job. Hundreds of people in your town have similar needs — you just have to find them.
Let's say you charge $20 per visit. If you have 1 client and visit 3 days a week, you'll be at $240/month.
Imagine you now have 5 clients and visit 3 days/week. That’s $1,200/month.
Dial it up or down depending on your schedule.
And $20 is just from my experience. This could be low, it depends on your neighborhood's wealth. So adjust accordingly!
That’s it!
This is a straightforward side hustle I know works and can start making you money from your first client.
Chances are you’ll meet some amazing families while doing this as well so get out there and help those old folks - they’re waiting!
MEME OF THE DAY
Mark Zuckerberg is going after Elon Musk even harder by dropping Meta’s new “Twitter” called Threads. Maybe this cage fight will happen after all 😂😂
That's a wrap! Enjoy the weekend :)
