THOSE WORTHLESS RECEIPTS AREN'T WORTHLESS NO MORE

While I was scouring the internet looking for good side hustles, I came across one that doesn't pay you a lot BUT...it's about the easiest one there is.

As easy as, scanning your grocery receipt and getting paid for it.

I found 3 popular apps people use:

  1. Ibotta - mainly for groceries

  2. Fetch - literally for any receipt you have

  3. Upside - only for gas

And it's a mixed bag of reviews from our friends on Reddit. Some love these apps and some hate them.

Here's what two people had to say about Upside ๐Ÿ‘€

Here's one about the Ibotta app.

That response is gold ๐Ÿ˜‚

Consensus

It seems like the apps are hit or miss based on a lot of different factors (what stores you shop at, what area you live in, what type of brands you buy, etc). Most of the reviews are saying you can make money but to go for the deals on the apps and remember you're not going to make hundreds of dollars a month.

And I think that makes sense... this is a side hustle you should only spending 5-10 minutes a day on and knowing you're not going to be making hundreds a month going in will help manage expectations.

How does Receipt Scanning Work?

You shop from participating outlets, scan your receipts using any of the appsโ€ฆ. then receive cash back or gift cards of your choice.

These apps run off a point system where you get points for scanning each receipt that equates to a dollar amount.

Some of them also have minimum's you have to hit before you cash out. Ibotta, for example, requires you to have $20 in your account.

But if youโ€™re going to be getting gas already, Upside will give you cash back, which you can then cash out through PayPal, direct deposits, or e-gift cards

My opinion: First try the Upside app - it seems to have the best reviews and since gas is through the roof, a few cents off each gallon will help. Then I'd try Ibotta second and Fetch third.

What's nice about these apps is they all pretty much work the same way and walk you through how to use them when you download the apps - so no in-depth guide needed!

Here's the steps:

  1. Download the app

  2. Set up your account - you usually get paid with PayPal or Stripe

  3. Make purchases per-usual, scan your receipts and get paid (this can be gift cards to your stores of choice or cash, up to you)

Potential Earnings

Depending on how much shopping you do, you can make anywhere from $10 to $30 a month scanning receipts.

Not that much, but with these apps you don't have to dip into your pocket for that Netflix subscription every month, unless they raise it again ๐Ÿ™„.

TIPS FROM YA BOY ๐Ÿ‘€

  • Points do expire - for Upside it's every January 1st and July 1st; for Fetch Rewards it's after 90 days. Ibotta points don't expire so use it if you're saving up for something big

  • Plan your grocery list around current offers to maximize your cash back and earn more

  • Link your participating brandโ€™s loyalty account with your Ibotta to earn points so you wonโ€™t have to scan your receipt

  • Refer friends and family to increase your earnings
